The Constant Gardener
This article definitely captured my attention because the topic was one which many refrain from talking about. The article takes a very serious life-threatening disease and shows the audience how difficult HIV/AIDS is to go through and the struggles that come with it. This shows how the disease can take away and ultimately deteriorate someone's life. It makes me appreciate how fortuante I am not to have this disease. It proves that love does conquer all because the gardnener never gives up due to how much he loves and cares about his partner. He literally gives up his life in order to take care of someone which many people wouldn't think to do. Even the nurse is surprised at how dedicated the gardener is because it has been going on for over 10 years. It must be difficult living life every day besides when one becomes a parent. He truly does care about his partner and is willing to do anything to make him better and to help him overcome this disease. Towards the end of the article, it becomes clear that the AIDS patient is becoming less hopeful and is making it clear that he will not be able to live with the disease for much longer. The patient really is stripped of himself and his normality. Hopefully one day someone will come up with a cure to this horrible disease because no one deserves to have a disease like that comes upon them at any given time. This article was very moving and caught my attention because it goes into detail about what the daily life process is when having this disease. This disease is on the rise and everyone should take precautions because anyone could have this disease. I think that because of this article, everyone should appreciate their lives and to never take things for granted.
Becoming Adolf
In this article, fashion trends are being described. With the toothbrush moustache, people now recognize it as a symbol of hatred. Long ago though, this was not the idea people thought of. Hitler made this moustache a symbol of his evil power. He made this trend very famous but not in a way people tend to think of as classy. When someone mimics his appearance, they are seen as a form of Hitler, which is something none of want to happen in history again. I thought it was interesting that this article was displayed in a fashion magazine (Vogue) because this is not the typical article which one would read. If one were to walk down the street wearing this moustache, they would not get positive looks. People would often be afraid and wouldn't be comfortable. Hitler went down in history not with a lot of fans who supported his actions, but they were against them and very confused as to why someone would do the things he did to innocent people. With his moustache, he seems superior to others which is the goal he wanted. During the Second World War, the moustache was very common among German soldiers and Hitler was ordered to trim his moustache so he could wear a gas mask. Hitler wore the moustache with the purpose of being remembered and new that no one else would be able to get away with wearing this facial hair. In modern day, no one would think to name their child Hitler because of the association many would come to. He truly did make history and his moustache is truly what we symbolize him with. The moustache he displayed truly changed when he started wearing it. If I were to see someone wearing the Hitler moustache, I would think something was wrong with them because no one should want to resemble the hatred he displayed and what a hateful person he was.
